BOBBING FOR APPLES

Part 1

Origin:  Celtic festival of Samhain

The Celts of Northern Ireland, The United Kingdom and Northern France celebrated the new year on November 1, marking the end of summer and the beginning of winter.

The end of summer meant the end of the harvest and the beginning of the “death” of winter.

It was believed that on October 31st (the night of Samhain) the world between the living and the dead dissolved which allowed the spirits to return to harm their crops and cause mayhem.

On this night the Celts also believed that the Druids (priests) could foresee the future through the presence of the spirits.

To protect themselves from the mischief of the dead, the Celts lit bonfires, dressed in animal skins and sacrificed crops and animals to the deities.
